Job Title: R&D Scientist - Raw Material Procurement 

Reports to: R&D Manager - Product Development 

 

JOB SUMMARY:

 

The Raw Material Procurement R&D Scientist is responsible for the administrative coordination and evaluation of commodity products for purchase. This position directly supports commodities & R&D activities to evaluate raw materials for Blommer while working cross functionally with commodities, R&D, quality, operations, purchasing and regulatory functions. This role requires the management of analytical testing and administration of specialty sensory panels to maintain customer specific requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Responsibility to track, manage, perform, and understand physical testing of chocolate products including, but not limited to fineness, fat content, FFA, and color relating to raw material purchases. For sensory specific tasks, administers and performs evaluation of commodity products and makes recommendations for purchase and disposition to support corporate decision making based on metrics established for each commodity and possible usage.
  • Ability to proactively communicate with raw material suppliers, third party laboratories and internal stakeholders on status of products under evaluation.
  • Ability to interpret results and understand the possible effect on the supply chain. Articulate key findings to stakeholders including suggesting creative solutions to support business objectives. Critical liaison and facilitator between these groups.
  • Responsibility to perform hands on chocolate product sample processing (receiving, cataloging, and routing samples through laboratories for evaluation).
  • Detailed data entry and tracking of related documents, supplemental material, correspondence with suppliers, laboratories, and all stakeholders.
  • Responsibility to seek to become subject matter expert of Corporate Blommer plant capabilities, needs, and customer requirements to provide context for critical decision making.
  • Conduct sensory specialty panels including interaction with customer to maintain customer specific sensory requirements. Includes preparation of product controls and samples for sensory panel as well as following prescribed testing methodology while recording and acting on results as necessary. Periodic collaborative testing with customer panels required.
  • Continuous pursuit to maintain and expand chocolate product tasting expertise is required. Daily tasting of various types of cocoa butter, chocolate liquor, cocoa powder, and finished chocolate products to constantly expand sensory skills as well as chocolate component understanding is required.
  • Additional responsibilities will be to support sensory activities required to support the overall business related to, but not exclusively R&D and marketing efforts.

Qualifications

  • Degree in Food Science or science-related field
  • 1 – 3 years’ experience in chocolate related industry. To successfully achieve the position requirement, the R&D Scientist must have an elevated skillset in problem solving, independent working, communication, general laboratory protocols, attention to detail and process as well as the ability to taste chocolate product and willingness to expand this skillset.
  • Proficient in computer skills using Microsoft Office Suite
  • Requires minimal travel. (0 - 5%)
